Mezzo-soprano Honeychild Coleman was born in 1967 in Kentucky and currently
lives in Brooklyn, New York. She has been described as "Bjork
meets Miriam Makeba in the Sex Pistols' basement" (VIBE) and "Kate
Bush meets Sarah Vaughn in a mosh pit" (Washington Post), with
which she accompanies herself on guitar, (electric) mountain dulcimer,
and vocal and instrumental loops.
As a solo artist, Honeychild has shared the bill with Cibo Matto and
Rasputina (Vulvapalooza Festival, NYC), Mike Ladd, Stiffed and Peaches
(Berlin). She performed during the 2003 AIM 23 Opening at the Bronx
Museum (as DJ Sugarfree) and at the 2003 Outlaw Festival (SubTonic,
NYC). Recent career highlights also include an appearance in James
Spooner∂s rockumentary "AFROPUNK: The Rock and Roll Nigger
Experience", and solo performances in collaboration with visual
artist Jane D∂Arensbourg at the Oskar Von Miller Strasse Gallery
in Frankfurt (Germany) and The Wooshi Wooshi and Cable Records Music
Festivals in Barcelona (Spain).
Pending collaborative projects for Honeychild include future works with
Spectre (Wordsound), DJ Delmar (Jungle Sky/Derivative Action), Badawi,
M. Sayyid (Anti-Pop Consortium) and Shiner Massive Soundsystem .
Honeychild currently fronts rock outfit Audio Dyslexia, which includes
ex-members of Cop Shoot Cop, Barkmarket, and the Spitters.
She has recorded and performed live with New York-based artists "Badawi",
"we?", "Spectre", "Phylr", "Shiner
Massive Soundsystem" and Italy-based project "HERE".
HERE opened for Morcheeba and Sonic Youth during their Summer 1998 Tour.
Honeychild is also a member of the Sistagrrl Riott Collective, a group
of female African American rock musicians who front their own bands
and organize shows and social gatherings. She's an honorary member of
the NYC all-female-based DJ Collective -Table Manners.
